Under Magnolia: A Southern Memoir is Frances Mayes’s story of her childhood and youth in the 1940’s and 1950’s here
in Fitzgerald, at Randolph-Macon College, and at the University of Florida. She presents many elements of small-town
southern and college life: her vivid, battling parents and her extended family; her youthful infatuations, sexual
explorations and romances; her struggles with authority; her intellectual and literary growth; and her long effort to
understand, to celebrate, and to appropriate the deep influence of her rather tragic mother—and the South itself.
Frances Mayes is the author or co-author of six books about Tuscany. The now-classic Under the Tuscan Sun was a
New York Times bestseller, and her Bella Tuscany and Every Day in Tuscany have both been
international bestsellers. She is a food and travel writer and editor, and also the author of the novel Swan,
numerous books of poetry, and The Discovery of Poetry: A Field Guide to Reading and Writing Poetry. Her books have
been translated into over 50 languages, and many are available at the Fitzgerald-Ben Hill County Library.
The event will take place Friday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the
